What is Counselling?

Counselling is the provision of professional assistance and guidance in resolving personal or psychological problems. Through counselling sessions, the therapist utilises a number of talking therapies to help you overcome personal or psychological difficulties.

So how do you know if you need counselling? Well, many people think that they should solve their psychological issues on their own. Others think that their difficulties should be discussed with friends and family members. I would argue that both statements are correct. Indeed, I would agree that human beings are very adaptable to cope with challenging situations and that it is helpful to discuss one’s difficulties with family and friends. However, when you can no longer cope with the demands of life and function as you want, you may need help from a professional. The question to ask yourself in order to establish whether you should access professional therapy could be: "Do the psychological difficulties that I experience prevent me from functioning on a daily basis, colouring every aspect of my life?". If the answer to that question is yes, I will be happy to help you.

According to my experience, many people who suffer from personal or psychological difficulties wait for years before making the decision to access counselling. For instance, many people hope that their issues may dissipate and sometimes they do. However, many people endure difficulties for years still hoping that it will get better one day. Others may invest in a new relationship in the hope that their new partner will help them to overcome their issues. Although in such cases those individuals may feel better for a while due to the rush of being in love, internal difficulties are likely to re-emerge sooner or later as they remain unresolved. Additionally, sometimes people are not completely aware about what bothers them, because the root of their difficulties may be unconscious. Consequently, they do not seek help as they do not really know what it is “wrong with them”. In this respect, I want to clarify that it does not matter if you do not really know what bothers you as I will assist you in identifying and assimilating your difficulties.

I know that there are a lot of people out there who suffer in silence. Through my compassionate stance and my comprehensive training I am able to understand people’s pain and target their difficulties through the provisioning of professional counselling.
